Conversational Hypnosis - The Art of Persuasion

The practice now known as Conversational Hypnosis is derived from Milton Erickson's work with more conventional hypnosis. Recognizing that not all people will willing to enter a "traditional trance state," that being induced by the practitioner, he developed techniques to elicit the same response to suggestion without the standard induction. Since every person enters a hypnotic state every day, and most do it several times per day, (such as concentrated attention to a television program, or reading a book and being absorbed in the story), Erickson sought to find advantage in utilizing the subject's natural, non-induced state of hypnosis to deliver suggestions. Thus the beginnings of Conversational Hypnosis were born.

The first step is to "Develop Rapport."

Developing rapport is as simple as agreeing with the other person, with words, tone of voice, their posture, etc. Agree with what they say. If they tell you that it's cold outside, (even if you find it fairly warm), say something like, "Yeah, it's a little nippy out, isn't it." Match their tone of voice, and perhaps their accent if they have one, without mocking them. Don't overkill it while matching them. This may take a little practice. Sit or stand in a similar fashion, but not the exact way they do. Subtly mirror their body language. Developing rapport is easy for you to do with these simple techniques.

The second step is "Confusion or Distraction"

At this point, you would abruptly change topics or go in an entirely different direction from where you were in the conversation. This is a short step. Just flip the conversation on it's ear and your subject will become conversationally disoriented.

The third step is "New Suggestion"

As your subject is temporarily disoriented with how the conversation was going, it is time to insert some direct (to the point) or indirect (much more subtle) suggestions related to the original subject matter, that will engage them in a new direction. It often helps the subject to find a new solution to what ails them.
